Austin Murphy is a long-time writer for Sports Illustrated, and during his career he has covered everything from the Super Bowl to the Tour de France. He has written numerous books including The Sweet Season, The Happiness of Pursuit, and Unstoppable. During our chat we covered everything from Austin’s thoughts on cycling and Lance Armstrong to his recent Zappos.com Rock ‘N’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon adventure dressed as Elvis for an upcoming piece in Sports Illustrated.
He is the author of Saturday Rules, The Sweet Season, and his latest book is The Happiness of Pursuit. In that book Austin Murphy from Sports Illustrated takes you inside the world of one of America’s greatest cyclists, Davis Phinney. The book is a GREAT read and Austin is a joy to chat with.
For his teammates, Davis Phinney was always their go-to guy when it came to winning time. The same goes for Huddle and me when it comes to lining up a guest for a classic interview. Davis is always our go-to guy as well. His new book, The Happiness of Pursuit, chronicles his legendary years as one of America’s best cyclists, his marriage to Olympic Gold Medalist Connie Carpenter and the blossoming cycling career of their son Taylor. When he was 40 years old, Davis was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and the book also deals with the creation of the Davis Phinney Foundation and their search every day for small victories.
